About Lab
Decarbonization Lab is a digital space for experiments, field tests and accumulation and sharing of knowledge in decarbonizing the textile and fashion supply chain.
For the industry-ameliorating idea, Decarbonization Lab has been awarded as one of the top 10 winners in the prestigious Global Change Award 2025 on 20 May 2025 at Olde Bell, London, UK. The Global Change Award 2025, backed by the H&M Foundation, is often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of the fashion industry”, supporting bold, early-stage innovations with the power to decarbonize fashion. In this year’s campaign, a total of 476 ideas from 69 countries across 6 continents were submitted. The Expert Panel of the Global Change Award 2025 examined these ideas, vetting each finalist and advising on how to choose the Top 10 winners.

The origin of the Lab
Dr. Mohammad Abbas Uddin, Founder of the Decarbonization Lab, has been active in the textile industry and academia since 2002. The idea for the Decarbonization Lab grew from his extensive work with Reed Consultancy and insights gained through more than 200 RECP projects implemented for IFC, global brands, GIZ, and other development partners. Continuous engagement with over 300 factories revealed a clear knowledge gap and an urgent need for structured guidance, particularly in wet processing. His involvement for GIZ and H&M’s WaSaTex project (2023–2024) and GIZ’s Informed Choice Matrix (ICM) initiative (2021–2022) further exposed broader sustainability challenges and confirmed industry demand for a unified, practical platform supporting low-cost/no-cost process innovation, resource efficiency, and decarbonization. These experiences collectively shaped the foundation of the Decarbonization Lab as an early-stage, industry-informed initiative aimed at accelerating responsible, low-carbon textile production. Supporting this journey, a skilled engineering team has been actively developing and strengthening the concept through their technical expertise and on-ground experience.
